Season 4 is about Women’s Health
From Episode 3 of Season 3 - The Politics of Women From Episode 3 of Season 3 - The Politics of Women's Rights in Turkey with Nevsin Mengü

As COVID continues to ravage America and the world, domestic violence is also surging. According to the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, when the pandemic began, incidents of domestic violence increased 300% in China; 25% in Argentina, 30% in Cyprus, 33% in Singapore, 50% in Brazil, and in the U.K., where calls to domestic violence hotlines soared.

The United Nations has dubbed domestic violence the shadow pandemic and reports that for women around the world, the pandemic has created a double threat-- the risk of getting COVID and the danger of being trapped in lockdown with their abusers.

I’ve been thinking about Professor Robert’s words more as the nation feels like it’s getting ready to go to war over Critical Race Theory (CRT).

From Texas to Pennsylvania to Loudoun County Virginia, why do I get the feeling the people shouting about CRT at the top of their lungs most likely have no idea what they are talking about?

One of the key themes in @anushayhossain 's book i One of the key themes in @anushayhossain 's book is the power of women telling their stories. During her research, Anushay became obsessed with the stories women don't tell and what we keep to ourselves. One of the most powerful stories she came across in her work is that of Tomeka Isaac who started the nonprofit organization, Jace's Journey after the loss of son. Isaac's story embodies the message that when women share our narratives, everything changes. How we view an issue changes. The season finale of Spilling Chai on the Pain Gap is a tribute to women who have the courage to share their experiences with the world to remind all of us that the life of every woman and birthing person's life counts.

Meet our amazing Season Finale guest, TOMEKA ISAAC Meet our amazing Season Finale guest, TOMEKA ISAAC (@msjamesnowisaac

Tomeka Isaac is a leading voice for reproductive empowerment, working to eliminate racial disparities in pregnancy care, and advocating for health equity for all. Like most in this space, a life-altering past experience called her to this work. Her story has been featured in Parents.com and many other media outlets.

Tomeka is an Executive Director, speaker, educator, and lobbyist. Her partner organizations include March of Dimes, MomCongress, MoMMa’s Voices, YWCA, Preeclampsia Foundation, MAEVE.

In 2017, Tomeka and her husband Brandon were thrilled to be welcoming their first child Jace Alexander into the world upon learning of Tomeka’s pregnancy.

But just one month before Jace was due, on May 14, 2018, the couple was faced with tragic news that Jace had no fetal heartbeat. While processing that shock, Tomeka was also told she had H.E.L.L.P Syndrome (Hemolysis Elevated Liver Enzymes Low Platelet) and that she was dying due to a hematoma on Tomeka’s liver the size of a softball and almost a liter of blood in her abdomen.

Jace died in utero and Tomeka was rushed to surgery to save her life. It would take seven surgeries for her to leave the hospital 45 days later.

It was later uncovered after Jace’s death and Tomeka’s diagnosis that they both could have been easily prevented, not by an expensive medical procedure, but by a simple urine test.

Losing Jace caused Tomeka and Brandon to re-examine the facts of their medical diagnoses to see what happened, what needed to change, and what could be done to prevent this from happening to anyone else ever again.

Tomeka’s now unbridled passion and purpose to spread awareness and to be a catalyst for change as it relates to racial and implicit biases in healthcare prompted Tomeka and her husband to start Jace’s Journey in 2019, a nonprofit organization working towards eliminating the disparities in maternal and infant health through education, advocacy and community engagement, where Tomeka serves as Executive Director.
